Card Magic Tricks - Using a Svengali Deck

If you are looking to learn how to do magic tricks with playing cards, then one of the most important props you will require is a deck of Svengali magic cards. The Svengali deck consists of 46 cards, 23 of which are all duplicate and are slightly shorter than the 23 that are all different and marginally longer. The shorter cards are called key cards are mostly eight of diamonds or three of clubs.

When setting up the Svengali deck for the first time you should alternate between a longer and a shorter card throughout the pack. Ensure that the bottom face card is a different card and that the top card is one of the duplicate cards unless your trick requires you to set up differently.

The reason to set the deck up like this is so that you can either show the deck of cards to be all the same or all different. To show the cards as all different you should hold the deck in your right hand, place your thumb along the top of the deck and your fingers along the bottom. Using your index finger on the rear of the deck you can flick the cards onto your other hand just like flicking through a book, this will display the cards singly as they fall.

If you require to show the deck as all the same simply place the deck in your hand face up and repeat the process, if this technique seems difficult at first don't worry as this will become second nature with a little practice. Once you have learnt this method you are on your way to becoming a true magician.
